Right from track one, "Violet," this 1994 album uses raw emotion, rollercoaster dynamics, strumming and raging guitars and infectious melodies to establish itself as one of the most essential landmarks of the grunge era. The hit "Doll Parts" is among the other essentials here, along with the alt-rock favorites "Softer, Softest" and "Asking for It." Though its release was surrounded by tragedy (Kurt Cobain died a week before its release and Hole bassist Kristen M. Pfaff died two months later), this was a triumphant rock record, one that returns to us here in fine vinyl form.
